BAY AREA – Take part in a tradition that originated thousands of years ago and welcome the Lunar New Year. Also known as the Chinese New Year, the celebration marks the first new moon on the lunar calendar. This 15-day festival is often observed with customs and ceremonies to honor ancestors and banish bad luck. It is customary to present family members with red envelopes (called lai see or hongbao) containing small amounts of money. Red decorations are prevalent during the festival due to the ancient legend of a man-eating beast that feared the fiery hue. According to the Chinese zodiac, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, and those born during this year are said to be “powerful individuals: authoritative, brave and self-assured.” If you were born in 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 or 2010, you’re also a Tiger!
