California’s early rich and famous built their magnificent summer estates in the area, and you can still visit the archeological remains of three at the Tallac Historic Site and those of the Tallac Resort, home to two major hotels, a casino and many outbuildings. Valhalla Estate, as well as the Pope and Baldwin Estates, are open for guided tours and host a variety of events.

Summer festivities and recreation surely didn’t end a century ago! During the warmer months, follow your adventures with a swim in Valhalla’s backyard, as Camp Richardson beach is only a few steps away. Rent kayaks and paddleboards, enjoy drinks at the beachside bar and cool off with delicious ice cream right down the road.

With plenty of sites to explore and history to learn, Valhalla remains an interesting and integral part of South Lake Tahoe’s past, showcasing the homes and everyday artifacts used by the area’s earliest pioneers.
