Mare Island

Boasting some of the most unexplored spots in the Bay Area, the Mare Island Walking Trails will present you with beauty AND history!

VALLEJO – Looking for a new and unusual place to go walking or hiking? Mare Island offers some of the most unexplored walking terrain in the Bay Area. Take in superb scenic views of San Pablo Bay, Mt. Diablo, the Carquinez Straits, East Bay hills, Mt. Tamalpais and the Sonoma and Napa Valleys while you walk or run these beautiful trails. Even if hiking isn’t for you, you’ll want to come and explore the rich history Mare Island offers. As one of the biggest and busiest shipyards during World War II, you’ll want to take a look at the history you may be unaware of that’s in your own backyard!

There are a few different trails for varying ability levels. The 4-mile roundtrip San Pablo trail is an easy walk on flat land, with 12 interpretive panels and benches along the way.

You may spot endangered animals in some of these areas, so be aware and respectful of their habitat. There are no restroom facilities available, so please come prepared!
